What We Do

We operate a waste-to-energy facility that handles the municipal solid waste of 10 percent of Connecticut’s residents, reduces the amount of space occupied in landfills, and generates energy through a cleaner process than most American power plants.

Since 1988, BRRFOC has disposed of 3.5 million tons of waste, generated enough clean electricity to power 10,000 homes, eliminated the need to store more than 2.7 million tons of solid wastes in landfills, and saved 3.5 million barrels of oil.

We are concerned with conservation, from encouraging recycling practices to protect our natural resources to operating our plant in the most cost-effective way possible to save the budget of our member communities.

As an information resource to our member towns, we provide recycling guidelines and contact information for municipal services. We advocate for legislation that would improve the waste management practices in the state of Connecticut, such as creating a bill to regulate the disposal of electronic waste.

Our facility was recently named by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as a safe facility, an honor awarded to fewer than 0.02 percent of the seven million workplaces in the U.S.

What Happens To My Trash?
Trash travels from your curbside to our Bristol waste facility where it is transformed into energy to power your neighborhood.
